Welcome to Olalla!

Olalla is a small retirement-oriented community with approximately 300 residents, conveniently located on Highway 3A between Keremeos and Penticton in South Central British Columbia.   Boasting a mild winter climate and spectacular views, Olalla's quiet nature belies its rich and active past.

Olalla's name comes from the Salish Indian word, "Olallie", or Saskatoon Berry - a plant that grows in abundance throughout the Keremeos Creek Valley.  At the turn of the century Olalla was being heralded as one of the richest gold claims ever discovered in the Province's interior region.  Claims with presumptuous names, such as Star of Hope, Copper King, Bullion and Opulence and were staked and hopes were high.  Like many great mining stories, however, the initial finds didn't amount to much and the many mines that doted the hillsides were soon abandoned as none of the claims turned a reasonable profit.

Shopping and other services are easily accessed either in town at the General Store on Highway 3A, in nearby Keremeos, (12 km to the south) or in Penticton. (48 km to the North) Nearby attractions include the historic Keremeos Grist Mill, APEX Mountain Resort, Twin Lakes Golf Club, Cathedral Lakes Provincial Park, as well as nearby hiking, horseback riding and fishing and boating opportunities.  Wildlife viewing and photography is popular and accessible with Mountain Goats commonly seen, venturing right down to the highway immediately north of town.
